Dive Bombers and Seaplanes Swell Navy Fleet

Item

Fleets of training planes and warplanes are joining the navy as American aircraft factories push the production of new machines for defense. The “SBD” dive bomber; already in quantity production at the Douglas Aircraft plant at Santa Monica, Calif., is one of the latest additions to the naval air arm and is reported to be superior in performance to the German “Stukas.” For training purposes the Ryan Aeronautical company is building two- seater seaplanes. The “STM-2” is a low-wing open cockpit monoplane with a 150-horsepower, air-cooled, in-line engine.
