AN 80-FOOT, mobile, self-launching scis-
sors bridge, developed by Army Engineers,
was going into rapid production for use on
the Jap home islands when the war ended.
Made of aluminum-plate girders and weigh-
ing 13 tons, the bridge is transported by
and launched from a semitrailer hauled by
a six-ton truck tractor. Winches and hy- |
draulic rams powered by a 45-horsepower
gasoline engine raise and unfold the span
and later pick it up. The semitrailer also
has a hydraulic rear steer, which permits
turning within a radius of 55 feet and makes
backing into launching position easier.
