Air-Operated Siren Gives Air Raid Warnings

Item

Compressed air is used in a siren developed at the Bell Telephone laboratories to give it a powerful wail. Placed on the Manhattan bridge in New York City to test its ability as an air raid siren, it sent out a shriek that was heard as far away as the Battery.
