The (recto) obverse part of this bronze medal bears the inscription "ITALIAN INDEPENDENCE" framing in a circle the winged Lion of Saint Marc (symbol of the Republic of Venice) seated on his right; The back part (verso) reverse bears the inscription VESSILLO DI VITTORIA 1848 framing a trifoliate cross. The medal was awarded for the liberation of Venice from the Austrians (1848). Owned by Ulisse Cantoni (1821-1909), of the Zambeccari Battalion.
It was meant to hang on a yellow and red (color of Venice's flag) silk ribbon.
