COMPLETELY swathed in protective clothing,
rubber boots, steel helmet, and a gas mask, the
British air-raid warden in the photograph at the
left is shown swinging a large wooden rattle, a
noise maker of the type often used in celebrating
such festivities as New Year's Eve. If forced by
the necessity of donning his gas mask to abandon
blowing a warning whistle to spread the alarm of
an approaching air raid, the warden can continue
to sound the alarm by swinging the clattering
wooden rattle.
