TO ELIMINATE the columns and trusses
that obstruct production in conventional
plants, consulting engineer Herbert H.
Stevens, Jr., of New York City, has designed
an airplane factory in which the circular
roof, 1,200 feet in diameter, is supported by
an air pressure of only one ounce above
normal atmospheric pressure (14.7 pounds
per square inch at sea level). Sixteen fans
and four exhaust towers provide ventilation
in addition to the air pressure which, being
low, will have little or no effect on the
workers. Other advantages include quick
construction, low operating cost, and the
saving of vital materials. The roof will cover
an unobstructed working area of 26 acres.
