Title (Dublin Core)
Papal Officer’s Helmet
Description (Dublin Core)
A blackened "boiled" [= water hardened] leather helmet, topped by a plume holder with a white horsehair willow plume [arbush?]. The skull is trimmed with gilded brass metal parts and has a brass front plate showing the decussate keys mounted by the tiara and framed at the bottom with the name of the pope "PIO IX". It seems to be the Civic Gard papal officer's helmet [1].
A little paper label hanging on the top of the helmet says "1847/ Elmo portato dal maggiore/ Luigi Cocchi/ Capo battaglione Guardia Civica/ di Budrio" [1847/ Helmet worn by Major Luigi Cocchi, Battalion Leader of the Budrio Civic Gard]
