WHEN. He Uited Sinton fret
joined the Allies, some of our
airmen sported a star within a circle
as the insignia of our air service.
It was not long before the need for
distinguishing marks of greater uni-
formity was felt, and we adopted
the insignia of concentric circles
used by our Allies, the only dif-
ference being in the colors. This
caused some confusion to artists,
and they often got French or Eng-
lish color arrangement on American
airplanes.
In an attempt to help readers to
distinguish between the planes when
they see them in illustrations, the
symbols below have been giventheir print or magazine value rather than their
actual color value.
