JAPANESE women made socks for
their soldiers in a way that was far less
expensive than ours, and much simpler.
They made them out of paper. Paper,
if you stop to think of it, has a reputa-
tion for keeping in the warmth of the
body. These Japanese socks were of
thick, heavy rice paper, made in a single
piece, shaped like a baby’s sock. They
‘were worn for only a few days and then
discarded.
