ONCE the stacks of this cruiser were
striped and blotched to make her
hard for an enemy to look at. Camou-
flage was one of the most picturesque
things the war brought, but already the
word is slipping from the common
speech and our warships are putting
off their weird motley for new spring
coats of peace paint.
Swung high in bo's'n seats, the blue-
jackets are changing the funnels back to
their conventional gray. The painters
start at the top of the tall stacks, and
are lowered from time to time as they
finish the sections within their reach.
