“’SURFACE-BOMBING" passing
ships, Rafael Giminez Ruiz, Philip-
pine inventor, would reverse the
depth-bombing practice to “drop”
torpedoes up from submarines. His
weapon is shaped very much like a
conventional airplane bomb. The
nose is loaded with explosive, while
the tail, which is finned to guide
the ascending torpedo, contains hy-
drogen to provide buoyancy. Con-
tact sets off the charge. The tor-
pedo would be released far enough
below the surface to give the sub-
‘marine time to get out of range be-
fore the explosion. Since the sub-
marine would not have to approach
the surface to discharge the new
weapon, danger of discovery would
be minimized, and the undersea
craft would have an answer to the
depth charges of surface vessels.
