FOXHOLE DIGGER. Three tools are com-
bined in the Army's new modified M-1
shovel, seen in the right hand of the soldier
in the picture below. Besides doing the work
of the old-style intrenching tool, with which
it is compared here, it has features which
fit it for service as an ax and a pickax. In
addition to its versatility, the new shovel
boasts a grip of improved design which fits
the hand better than that of the old model,
with less tendency to produce blisters. The
pickax point is a godsend to men caught on
clayey or stony ground when the dive bomb-
ers and fire from enemy guns start making
things too hot for them.
