QUICK TAKE-OFFS can be made even by
heavy bombers after a short run on aircraft
carriers equipped with this new launching
device, according to Franklin W. Durgin,
‘Washington, D. C., inventor. Increased lift
to get the planes up quickly is provided by
“amplifying” the breeze created by the
ship's motion between paired airfoils that
act like the familiar Venturi tube. The
structures sink flush with the deck when
not in use. The invention is designed to
make possible the use of shorter vessels,
which would be harder for enemy bombs and
torpedoes to hit.
